Adding sub-pages to your projects is one of the best ways to create 'depth' in your engagement, and provide a content-rich engagement experience to your participants. You can easily automate the navigation to your sub-pages using the Sub Nav tool.
This tutorial looks at using the rarely used (but very useful) Sub Nav tool to effortlessly create links to your sub-pages, and provide an easy way to navigate your project site.
About the Sub Nav tool
The Sub Nav is a simple tool that automatically generates a list of the sub-pages associated with a project. It can be added to any page and will scan the Sitemap to find any sub-pages belonging to the project page where you add it.
Sub-pages are automatically listed in the Sub Nav tool, unless a specific sub-page is exempted from the list by the content author. The main project page will always be displayed as the first item in the list and will be named 'Project Home'.
You can set a title to the Sub Nav block such as 'Navigation' or 'In this project', or you can forgo the title for the sake of a cleaner, 'minimal' look. You can also change the way it appears to your users.
The 'vertical' layout lists pages one on top of the other and is excellent for use in the sidebar content area.
Alternatively, the Sub Nav can list pages horizontally across a single line. This layout can be effectively used at the top of the project page, as this is a common user interface element in web design.
Sub Nav positioned in the 'horizontal' orientation.
We recommend using the horizontal option only when the sub-page list content spans a single line. If the content breaks across several lines, we recommend using the vertical option instead.
Setting up the Sub Nav
Setting up the Sub Nav is simple, just add it to the page or pages you want it to appear on. Use the clipboard function to copy the Sub Nav block to each sub-page if you want it to appear across all the pages of your project consistently.
Once added to a page, there are two configurable options available that will let you add a title to the block and set your preferred display layout (or orientation).
The Sub Nav will list pages in the order they appear in the Sitemap, and use the sub-page name in the listing. Sub-pages do not appear in the Sub Nav list until they are published from the 'Drafts' folder.
If you want to exclude a particular sub-page from being shown in the Sub Nav, navigate to the target sub-page, open the page's Settings (from the top Toolbar), and check the 'Exclude from Nav' option in the 'Details' section. You can also enable this option when setting up the page for the first time.
